This elegant tankard is an excellent example of a White-Slip Tankard, a type of vessel produced in the Late Cypriot (1600-1050 BC) - Early Cypriot period. Our example is covered in white slip, which was then painted with dark brown paint with bands of geometric motifs.
The tankard, with its long neck and globular body was, no doubt, a drinking vessel for wine. The handle and high “thumb hold”, projecting from the lip, would have made it well suited to this purpose. Its angular shape indicates that the tankard modeled off of metal prototypes, a common practice for ancient potters.
