This arresting amber colored pitcher was produced during the flourishing of the Roman glass industry after the invention of glassblowing. The single annealed handle and the thick, rounded lip are designed to facilitate pouring liquid, perhaps wine or water. Glass cups and pitchers were particularly valued in antiquity as tableware because, unlike the commonly available alternatives in bronze or clay, glass does not impart any of its own taste or odor. The form of the body is elegantly proportioned, recalling the popular shapes of Greek pottery.
