This pyxis is intact and complete, with the original lid, and in a perfect condition. Linear incisions ornament the vessel's body. The pyxis is a beautiful example of the “sickle” type, so named because the shape of the vessel resembles that of a sickle. This type was most probably used to hold perfumes or smaller precious objects.

Pyxides of this type generally are found in necropoleis. In the grave, the positioning of such pieces provide evidence that they were suspended from the belt of the deceased. The type most likely originated in Macedonia, although two such pyxides were found at Samos.
